15 Years After The Civil War.
15 years after the end of the bloody civil war, Sri Lanka is still struggling with the consequences. The country is also shaken by a severe economic crisis. Young people are trying to lead the country into a new future - the Swiss organisation Helvetas is supporting them. My report for the CH-Media newspapers.
At The Epicentre of The Global Economy.
With the support of Helvetas, cocoa farmers in Madagascar have been able to increase their yield and protect the rainforest. I visited Eliane Mary in the Sambirano Valley. And in the east, farmers are struggling with fluctuating vanilla prices. Here is my report for Schweiz am Wochenende and 20 associated Swiss regional newspapers.
A Kingdom for Democracy.
The fourth free elections were held in Bhutan at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024. To mark the 15th anniversary of the introduction of democracy, I went researching in Bhutan for Helvetas. The organization supported the small kingdom in the Himalayas in establishing democratic structures. My report was published in Schweiz am Wochenende and other CH-Media publications. And Helvetas magazine Partnerschaft featured a major report on the 50 years during which the organization has been active in the country.
Madagascar.
Vanilla farmers in Madagascar struggle with the highly fluctuating prices on the world market. After an all-time high at the end of the last decade, prices are now at rock bottom. Many farmers' livelihoods are at risk. I worked out the background in a report for "Schweiz am Wochenende".
Kyrgyzstan.
Helvetas provides a project called YOU in Kyrgyzstan. Its goal is to empower young Kyrgysz people.
Moldavia.
Just after the beginning of the horrible war in Ukraine, I went to Moldavia where Helvetas takes care of the refugees from the neighbouring country.
Kyrgyzstan.
When I travelled from China to Europe for my book Die neue Seidenstrasse - Chinas Weg zur Weltmacht, I visited some Helvetas projects in Kyrgyzstan. One of them is a tourism project in the Alay region where I met the young tourist guide Gulburak Begmataeva. See my story in the Helvetas magazine Partnerschaft.
Bangladesh.
In 2019, I visited the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh for the second time. There was a lot of progress, but the situation for the people in the camp is still very challenging.
Bangladesh.
Helvetas assigned me to visit the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh for the first time in spring 2018. See here the stories that were published after this visit.
Ethiopia.
Thanks to the SKY project, young people in Ethiopia learn professional skills in a three-month training programme. After that they can find a job or start their own business more easily. I visited this project on behalf of the Swiss development organisation Helvetas in 2017.
Laos.
In the northernmost part of Laos, next to the border with China, tea grows on centuries old trees and not, as is usal, on bushes. I visited the tea farmers in Phongsaly for Helvetas.
Nepal.
One year after the devastating earthquakes in Nepal, I visited the little village of Marbu at the foot of the Himalaya. The two earthquakes in 2015 destroyed Marbu completely. Helvetas supported the villagers with building new and earthquake resilient houses.
